How Are We Related? Navigating the Terminology

July 24, 2015 by Legacy Tree Genealogists

Relationship terminology can be confusing, but we've compiled a guide to explain how you are related to that cousin three times removed.

DNA relationships

How are we related?

That’s a question that we have been asked quite a bit lately, and sometimes determining that exact familial connection with someone else can be confusing.

  • What is the difference between a second cousin and a first cousin, once removed?
  • What does the “removed” mean, anyway?
  • If my mom has a cousin, how is he related to me?
  • Is my grandfather’s sister my great-aunt, or my grand-aunt?

Download free DNA ebook

If you have ever felt confusion over these terms, you are not alone!

Most of us know that our parents’ siblings’ children are our first cousins, and that our parents’ siblings themselves are our aunts and uncles. That’s easy enough to understand. It’s when you get to more distant connections that it becomes confusing.

If you share the same grandparents, there is no difference in the generations, so you are first cousins. If you share the same great-grandparents, you are second cousins. If you share the same great-great-grandparents you are third cousins, and so on.

However, if your grandparents are someone else’s great-grandparents, then you are first cousins once removed, because there is a generational gap between you. The thing to remember is that the “removed” is used when you and your relative are of different generations. For instance, you and your cousin’s child, or you and your father’s cousin are of different generations, so there is going to be a “removed” in a description of your relationship.

The numerical value, “once removed” or “three times removed,” counts back how many generations you have to go to find the common ancestor between you and that other relative.

For example, if your first cousin has children, those children are your first cousins once removed, because your grandparents are their great-grandparents (just one generation). If those children then have children, they are your first cousins twice removed, because your grandparents are their great-great-grandparents (which is two generations).

Similarly, your mom’s cousin is your first cousin once removed, because his grandparents are your great-grandparents. There is a generational difference. However, your mom’s cousin’s CHILD is your second cousin with no “removed” added, because the two of you share the same great-grandparents. There is no generational difference between the two of you, so there is no “remove.”

With regards to the difference between great-aunt, grand-aunt, etc. – this one is up to you! They're just different terms that mean the same thing. The siblings of your grandparents can be called either your great-aunts and great-uncles, or your grand-aunts  and grand-uncles.

    • Jennifer says

      November 2, 2021 at 10:56 pm

Depends on if that third cousin is related to you through the same people. They may be your third cousin on one side of their family, the side related to you, and they may be your friend’s third cousin on the other side of the family, the one not related to you.

My 4th great grandparents Fielding and Delphia have a daughter Geneviere and a son Stephen.
Stephen marries Nancy and they have a son, Sylvester.
Geneviere marries Phillip and they have a daughter, Hannah.

Sylvester and Hannah marry and have a son Cassius.

    Cassius is my Grandmother’s father.

What is the relationship of Sylvester and Hannah to my grandmother other than her grandparents? Aunt and Uncle?

Other than parents, what is the relationship of Sylvester and Hannah? 1st cousins?

    Thanks

    • Eric Caudle says

      May 15, 2021 at 8:28 pm

If I understand your explanation correctly, Sylvester and Hannah would be great grand-aunt and great grand-uncle to your grandmother. You are correct, Sylvester and Hannah are first cousins. If you want to double-check this quick assessment, I suggest you contact us for a consultation session with a researcher.

    • Heather - Legacy Tree Genealogists says

      November 21, 2022 at 12:50 pm

In this case, your aunt’s mom would be your step-grandparent. If your aunt and your dad’s brother have any children, then your cousins’ maternal grandmother would also be their paternal step-grandparent.

Not from a DNA standpoint since you aren’t biologically related. For family dynamics that would be a personal decision, I suppose.

My 11th Great Grandfather is the 4th G. Grandfather of President James Madison and the 9th G. Grandfather of President Theodore Roosevelt. How then am I related to these two Presidents?

    • Heather - Legacy Tree Genealogists says

      December 7, 2022 at 11:04 am

Assuming that you descend from your common ancestor through the same spouse (rather than through another wife), you would be 5th cousins 7 times removed to James Madison and 11th cousins twice removed from Theodore Roosevelt. If you or they descend from a different spouse of your common ancestor, then they could be half 5th cousins 7 times removed or half 11th cousins twice removed respectively.

      • Tandy L. Amburgey says

        December 7, 2022 at 9:44 pm

Thank you! I wasn’t expecting such a quick response so I did the research and came to with the same as you. 5th Cousin 7 X Removed to Madison and Teddy Roosevelt’s 11th Cousin. Although I didn’t get the twice removed

        December 7, 2022 at 10:00 pm

Would it make much of a difference that I am actually directly related to Sir Richards daughter Ann Williamson – Place? She is my 10th Great Grandmother. I assume this would just lower the numbers by one? Madison: 4th G. Grandfather 6 times removed and Roosevelt 10th Cousin once removed?

        • Heather - Legacy Tree Genealogists says

          December 8, 2022 at 2:11 pm

Sir Richards Mother is an Alleyne “Allen” (directly related) and daughter Ann is related back to my 2nd G. Grandmother, wife of William “Tanner Bill” Amburgey. So related twice in this spot. Benjamin Franklin 5th G. G.G., Sir Isaac Newton 10th, Shakespeare 11th, Robert the Bruce 20th. Pocahontas 6th, All Stewart Kings of Scotland, King Richard II “The Lion Heart 18th, & dozens more back to 0530 AD.

I have about 21,500 people in my Tree so with that many connections people just keep coming up. I am working on Queen Elizabeth II now, starting with King Henry VII. But have found, so far, that we are related thru Mary Stewart Queen of Scots, (My 11th G. Grand-Aunt), for sure. Seems to be a direct line from there down to Queen Elizabeth II.
If you don’t mind I could use your help to figure our exact relationship. If so I will give you my email incase I loose you: [email protected].

        December 12, 2022 at 3:03 pm

Thank you! It rained all weekend so I spent some research time and did all the tracing myself and it took 15 connections to get to Elizabeth II and King Charles II, of present day. Turns out Queen Elizabeth was my 13th Cousin and that makes the King my 13 Cousin 1 X Removed. Also, along the way, found King Henry VIII as my 13th Great granduncle. I have always loved History, even since School and College, so this is fun.
I am now going to search more on my 19th Great Grandfather; King Charles IV of Bohemia (1319-1378). He was King of Bohemia, King of Italy and Holy Roman Emperor. If interested, I’ll let you know.

My mother-in-law was impregnated by her father’s brother (her uncle) and had a son (in the 1940s). Later she married her husband, had another son who had a daughter. That granddaughter shows up in geneology as 1st cousins to her first son. Not sure how?

    • blankJessica - Legacy Tree Genealogists President says

      March 27, 2023 at 11:16 am

Hi Kiera! What an interesting circumstance! The first son would be a half uncle to the granddaughter. On average half uncles share about 12.5%, which is the same as you would see from a full first cousin relationship. When Ancestry and other testing sites give you a proposed relationship to someone, they often cherry pick a likely relationship from the spectrum of possible relationships. Hope this helps!

      Hi Neil!
Assuming the parent that is a first cousin to grandpa’s 2C is also a 2C to the Granpda.

If the parent is related to the 2C through a different line than 2C shares with the grandpa, there’s no relation–no blood relation at least.

    Hi!

I am trying to figure out the following: my son’s second cousin-in-law (is this a thing?), i.e. my maternal aunt’s husband is my uncle-in law. His cousin has a child, who is then my son’s second cousin-in-law (if I’m correct?). What title would my mom have in relation to my son’s second cousin-in-law? Very grateful for any and all help here.

    • blankJessica - Legacy Tree Genealogists President says

      June 12, 2023 at 2:18 pm

Hi Asa! Here’s what our professionals had to say about your question:

No direct relationship. Your aunt’s husband is technically her uncle by marriage, not uncle in law. Uncle’s cousin has no relationship to you or your mom, though technically he could be called your aunt’s cousin-in-law (cousin of her aunt’s husband) but that’s the closest thing to a connection. That cousin’s son has no relationship to you, your son, or your mom that can easily be described. Closest would be:
mom – sister’s husband’s first cousin once removed
son – great-aunt’s husband’s first cousin once removed

There are not official terms in the English language for the blood relatives of an in law by marriage (such as your maternal aunt’s husband’s parents, siblings, etc). People often use terms that aren’t technically accurate. For example two women who marry a pair of brothers may refer to each other as sisters in law, even though the correct term in English would be “my brother in law’s wife.” Even the term brother in law gets confusing because we use the words brother/sister in law to refer to the spouse of our sibling, or the sibling of our spouse. Some other languages have different terms for these different relationships but we don’t. Brandt’s terminology is correct, though you also could shorten the phrases to “my brother in law’s first cousin once removed” and “my great uncle in law’s first cousin once removed.” But yeah this adds in the murkiness of the multiple meanings of in-law.

      Hope this helps!

Hi Charlotte, it’s hard to say definitively without more information. However, an aunt would typically be your mother’s sister, not her cousin. Many people use the term “aunt” to refer to any elder in the community or family.

If I understand what I’ve read, my husband’s niece is not my niece. And, therefore, I don’t say she is my niece through marriage. Is this accurate? Thank you for your response

Hi JoAnn! Your husband’s niece would be considered your niece in law, or your niece through marriage. She would not be a genetic relative to you, but would be a niece in law or relative by marriage, just like her parent (your husband’s sibling) is your brother or sister in law.

Me and my boyfriend found out that our great-grandmothers are 1st cousins. How related are we?

Hi Tina! You are fourth cousins. And about 50 percent of the time fourth cousins aren’t close enough to even match on a DNA test. So not a terribly close relationship!

Question: found out my great great grandmother is my boyfriend’s grandfather’s sister. How are we related?

Hello, B! You are second cousins twice removed. He is a second cousin to one of your grandparents because they and he share great grandparents, and the twice removed means you are two generations younger than him in that family.

if I am related to my cousins through her mother (my aunt), am I related to her fathers side of the family as well? Would we be related by marriage? Would her second cousins on her fathers side be my second cousins by marriage?
