Challenges in Romanian Genealogy Research
Romanian genealogy is conducted almost exclusively onsite using church records, and to a lesser extent, civil registration records. For the provinces of Romania that used to be part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, some records are available online. For the rest of the country, records must be accessed in person at the various archives by an onsite researcher. The archives have a daily limit of how many books can be examined, and once they are viewed, you cannot request them again for six months, making it essential to plan research carefully. Documents that are less than 100 years old are restricted. The records are organized on the local level, so identifying the town of origin and religion of the family is essential before conducting any research in Romania.
