A family photo and a tale of Spanish and indigenous Taíno roots is what got Luis started on his genealogical journey at 14 years old. Since then, he has worked on unraveling his family’s roots on the island of Puerto Rico while also discovering new branches.
Education and Training
Luis earned a Certificate in Genealogical Research from Boston University and continued developing his genealogical skills with the help of courses such as ProGen Study Groups, GenProof Study Groups, and the CDG (Certification Discussion Group) series with Jill Morelli. Luis is also a member of various genealogical organizations tied to his ancestors’ places of origin. He was also awarded the Young Professional Scholarship by APG (Association of Professional Genealogists) in 2023.
Specialties
Luis’s research has taken him to various parts of Latin America and the Caribbean; however, his specialty lies on the island of Puerto Rico and researching his Indigenous, African, and European ancestry there. When not researching in Puerto Rico, Luis can be found researching the French overseas islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe and as well Andalusia and Mallorca in Spain – other ancestral homes to some of his ancestors.
Experience
As a genealogical researcher, Luis is able to use his linguistic as well as analytical skills in order to resolve genealogical questions. Prior to joining Legacy Tree Genealogists in 2024, Luis was a foreign language educator for 11 years teaching both Spanish and English in the U.S. and abroad. Luis is especially interested in the cross section between language, culture, and genealogy and loves to provide a similar insight to his clients. Luis enjoys using his teaching background to educate and converse with others on the importance of preserving family memories from their elders. When Luis is not researching, he can be found going on a run, reading, traveling, or trying to pick up a new language.
